Carlos Dolabella, 48, of Key Biscayne won the CEO World Triathlon Championship/USAT Triathlon National Age Group Championship on Aug. 22 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The race used an Olympic-distance format (1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride, 10-kilometer run). Representing Florida's Corporation First Class Rent a Car, Inc., as a CFO, Dolabella finished in 2 hours 12 minutes 53 seconds and was named the World's Fittest CEO.
Frank Karbe, 41, CEO of Exelisis, Inc., of San Francisco, was second in 2:14:38. James Schnauer, 37, president of Los Angeles-based Spice Design, Inc., was third at 2:15:41.
``It was an extremely difficult course,'' Dolabella said in an e-mail. ``Although the weather was cooler than Miami, we swam against the current at the Black River, and the bike and run courses were very hilly.
``My plan was to swim and bike the hardest I could and open a big gap on the rest and then survive on the run. That's exactly what happened.''
Dolabella, who qualified to represent the U.S. national team at the ITU Triathlon World Championships in 2010 in Budapest, Hungary, said it was the best organized race he has entered in years.
