Kim Nelson - Royal Containers (Brampton, Ontario, Canada)
Royal Containers is a manufacturer of corrugated containers to customers in everything from electronics to retail. In addition to 'making boxes', Royal products can also be found in theatres and retail stores as corrugated display pieces. Royal Containers is a manufacturing company located near the Toronto airport . This family-owned company was founded in 1980 and has enjoyed success and growth over the years. The newest facility located in Brampton, Ontario is 110,000 sqft and employs over 120 people. In addition to this facility there are 2 other locations that run 24/7, converting paper into corrugated.
Kim started work at Royal in 1992 and, as CEO of the company, is responsible for developing their strategy for growth and expansion. She is currently on the Board of Directors for the industry association and will become President in 5 years. Kim says, "In addition to my job as CIO (Chief Inspirational Officer-my new title) I sit on our industry's association, AICC, as Vice chairman."
Kim did her first triathlon in 1992 after graduating from University, where she swam competitively. Her first Ironman was at Ironman Canada in 1998, and since then she has completed 8 Ironman races (and counting!), including Hawaii in 2003 and the World 70.3 Championship in 2007. Last year she raced only 70.3 distance and 2 marathons including Boston, but for 2008 she will be heading back to her favorite race -Ironman Brazil. She has finished hundreds of triathlons, despite the challenge of running a company and having three young children (5, 3, and 2). Her children support her at her races, and race in their own Kids of Steel races locally. Her positive experiences from the CEO Challenges in Lake Placid and St. Croix (where she won overall in 2007 in 5:26) convinced her to sign up for the CEO Challenge at St. Croix again this year.
She trains with C3, and is coached by Barrie Shepley and Steve Bentley.
