2013 CEO Endurance World Championship, TN
September 6, 2013 - September 9, 2013
FRANK KARBE OF EXELIXIS IS 2013 WORLD’S FITTEST CEO®
BOULDER, CO (September 13, 2013) – Frank Karbe is the CFO of San Francisco biotechnology company Exelixis (NASDAQ:EXEL), and like other C-level executives has a very busy life between driving the business, family, social obligations, and travel. This past summer Frank added one more thing to his schedule – training for the CEO Endurance World Championship held at Blackberry Farm from September 6-9.
The training and schedule juggling paid off, as Frank demonstrated his incredible level of fitness by winning the competition and earning the title as 2013 World’s Fittest CEO®!
As an example of what is required to become the World’s Fittest CEO®, Frank sent this note upon his return to San Francisco following the event, “I got home at 9 pm only to turn around and leave again 20 min later to take the redeye to NYC. This is pretty indicative of my schedule in the last year. You add the challenges that come along with two young kids and calling preparing for this year’s competition a challenge doesn't even scratch the surface. But it's those victories that didn't come easy that are the best.”
The CEO Endurance World Championship is an annual event gathering some of the world’s fittest business owners, CEOs and C-level executives to the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee to see who can out-run, out-bike, out-swim and out-smart the rest of the field to win.
The competition is laid out like a stage race, with six different ‘mini competitions’ over three days. Points are awarded for each competition and the CEO with the most points after the sixth event wins.
Karbe won two of the stages (Team Obstacle and Open Water Swim) and was second or third in the others to win by seven points over Shawn Talbott, CSO of Utah’s MonaVie. Last year’s champion, Dan King of ReadyTalk, beat Doron Reuveni of uTest by only one point to take third place (and first in the over 50 division).
As a result of his win Karbe donated $12,000 to The Olympic Club Foundation charity, and as over-50 champion King donated $4,000 to Colorado Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Talking about the very unique format of the CEO Endurance World Championship, Dan King stated, "The event is a fabulous mix of strategy, fierce competition, and great camaraderie in a spectacular venue. It's like nothing I have ever done."
Brandon Witte of Sightline Systems talked further about the event format, saying, “The event is a very unique experience - imagine doing a month's worth of speed work in three days. It is really a true test of fitness.”
In addition to the competition, the CEOs enjoyed truly spectacular meals at Blackberry Farm, including a personal tour of the 60,000 bottle wine cellar by Proprietor Sam Beall. Shawna Talbott summarized his experience saying, “Spending time with top people in business, top people in athletics, and just plain top people personally - is the experience of a lifetime. My wife and I made many new friends here.”
The entire weekend was filmed and is being edited for a nationally syndicated TV show – The Fittest CEO® – that will air on CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX and other networks across the USA beginning in November, 2013.
The third annual CEO Endurance Championship is planned for Blackberry Farm Sept 18-21, 2014 with the addition of a number of new events that will challenge the fitness, coordination, and mental acuity of the CEO competitors.
